Shabnim Ismail’s return was difficult. She conceded 46 runs in 3 overs at an economy of 15.33. The veteran pace bowler came back from retirement for this World Cup but this was not the warm-up performance she would have wanted. She will be hoping to find her rhythm before the tournament proper begins.

Chasing 213 was always going to be an enormous task and South Africa never really got close. They ended on 127 for 6 — 85 runs short of the target.

This was the big positive for Australia from the bowling innings. Sophie Molineux who was only declared fit on May 13 after a back injury — bowled three overs of left-arm spin and took one wicket for just 16 runs at an economy of 5.33. That is a very good spell. She looks fit and ready for the tournament. Australia will be relieved.

Annabel Sutherland — 1 for 12 in 3 overs

The one concern for Australia is Shabnim Ismail. The returning veteran was expensive with the ball going at 15.33 per over. Australia’s bowlers were consistently better than their South African counterparts on the day.

For South Africa this was a tough day. Laura Wolvaardt and Ayabonga Khaka showed they can compete with anyone but the overall batting lineup was too inconsistent. Losing by 85 runs in a warm-up match against the defending champions is not ideal but South Africa will take confidence from Wolvaardt’s form going into their opening Group A match.

Australia face South Africa again in the actual tournament on June 13 at Old Trafford in Manchester. If today is any indication Australia will be strong favourites. But South Africa will have Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail more fully warmed up by then and the result could be much closer.
