Ajinkya Rahane has signed for Amsterdam Flames as their marquee player for the first edition of the European T20 Premier League, a move that arrived almost immediately after the former India captain called time on his international and Indian domestic career. Ajinkya Rahane joins Amsterdam Flames for the inaugural ETPL season.
The Flames announced the signing on Friday, 7 August, bringing one of the most respected names in Indian cricket to a competition that is trying to change the shape of the game across Europe.
Ajinkya Rahane Joins Amsterdam Flames After Retirement
The timing of the move was striking. Rahane revealed that the offer landed on the very day he announced his retirement, and he did not take long to make up his mind.
He explained that the opportunity came through on the same day as his retirement announcement, and that he took roughly a day to think it over before agreeing. For a player who spent 15 years in international cricket and 19 seasons in the Indian Premier League, the speed of the turnaround was notable.
At 38, Rahane brings a career that spans 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20 Internationals, more than 190 international appearances in all. He captained India in Tests, most memorably leading the side to a series win in Australia in 2020-21 with a century in Melbourne, and he most recently captained Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.
His departure from Indian cricket leaves that KKR captaincy vacant, and discussions over his successor are already underway ahead of the next IPL season.
Why Ajinkya Rahane Chose the ETPL 2026
Rahane framed the move around what he can pass on rather than what he can still score. He spoke about wanting to share his knowledge more widely rather than keeping it confined, and said he hoped doing so globally would benefit other players.
He was also clear about why Europe appealed. He pointed to the progress made by Ireland, the Netherlands and Italy in recent international competitions, and to the Netherlands in particular, who beat South Africa at both the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 50 over World Cup.
For Rahane, the ETPL represents a shop window. He described it as a platform for European players to show what they can do, noting that opportunities can arrive without warning. He also stressed that exposure to higher standards is what builds confidence among players from associate nations.
In a statement released by the franchise, Rahane said Europe is entering an exciting phase and has the potential to become one of the most promising frontiers in the game.
Steve Waugh’s Endorsement
Amsterdam Flames is co-founded by Steve Waugh, the former Australia captain, who also serves as the franchise’s chief cricket officer. The ownership group also includes Jamie Dwyer, the Olympic gold medallist in hockey, and businessman Tim Thomas.
Waugh was effusive about the signing, describing Rahane as possessing skill, resilience, humility and leadership. He added that Rahane has earned respect across world cricket both for his performances and for how he has carried himself, and said he has seen the composure Rahane brings first hand.
ETPL co-owner Abhishek Bachchan also welcomed the signing, pointing to the role Rahane can play in inspiring the next generation of European cricketers.
What Is the European T20 Premier League 2026?
The European T20 Premier League is the first ICC sanctioned T20 competition on the continent, jointly backed by the cricket boards of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands. That cross border structure is unusual and is central to the league’s pitch: rather than three small national competitions, one league drawing on all three player pools.
Six city based franchises make up the field: Amsterdam Flames, Belfast Wolves, Dublin Guardians, Edinburgh Castle Rockers, Glasgow Cosmic and Rotterdam Dockers.
The season runs from 26 August to 20 September 2026. There are 30 league matches, followed by a Qualifier on 19 September and the final on 20 September. The tournament splits across two countries, opening in the Netherlands at Voorburg before shifting to Malahide in Dublin for the closing stages, including both knockout matches.
Amsterdam Flames begin their campaign in the tournament opener on 26 August, a Dutch derby against Rotterdam Dockers at Voorburg.
Rahane Will Not Be Alone
Rahane is not the only recently retired Indian name heading to Europe. Ravichandran Ashwin, a contemporary who also stepped away from Indian domestic cricket this year, has signed with Dublin Guardians, where he takes on the dual role of playing captain and mentor.
The reason both are available comes down to BCCI regulations. Indian players who are still active are barred from featuring in overseas franchise competitions, which means only retired cricketers can take part. That rule has effectively turned leagues like the ETPL into a landing spot for Indian players in the immediate aftermath of retirement, and there is speculation that more recently retired names could follow before the tournament begins.
Ashwin’s own route to the ETPL has been busy. He retired from BCCI affiliated cricket earlier this year, which made him ineligible for the Tamil Nadu Premier League, and played in Major League Cricket in the United States before committing to Dublin.

The Bigger Picture
For the ETPL, signings of this profile matter more than the runs they produce. A first season league needs credibility, and names like Rahane and Ashwin provide it, both with broadcasters and with the European players who will share dressing rooms with them.
The competition has also attracted a strong international contingent beyond the Indian pair, with players including Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult all involved across the six franchises, alongside the best of the local talent from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.
Whether the league sustains that level of interest beyond its first season is the real question. Europe has had franchise T20 experiments before without them taking root. What is different here is the joint sanctioning by three national boards and the ICC’s backing, which gives the ETPL a structural foundation earlier attempts lacked.
For Rahane, the move offers something straightforward: more cricket, in a new environment, without the weight of international selection. He has spoken about leaving the game in better shape than he found it, and a first season league in a developing cricket region is a reasonable place to try.
The Flames will hope he scores runs too. But on the evidence of how both the franchise and the league have framed this signing, his value to them is measured in more than that.
